More races for the Abarth 124 rally, with events in Romania and Italy next weekend

  • In Romania, the Abarth 124 rally of Florin Tincescu (ROM) and Alina Pop (ROM) faces dirt roads for the first time this year.
  • In Italy, young driver Cristopher Lucchesi (ITA) is in search of his fourth success of the season in the Italian Championship's R-GT category, in the Rally d'Elba.

This weekend, the Abarth 124 rally of the Bernini Rally team, competing in the Rally Aradului in Romania and crewed by Florin Tincescu (ROM) and Alina Pop (ROM), will be tackling dirt roads for the first time this year. On the one hand, this surface guarantees an exciting show for spectators, with dramatic drifting on gravelly, dusty roads, but on the other it demands a perfectly balanced car with excellent traction and agility, not to mention top-class driving skills.

Thanks to the capability for adapting both traction and engine response during the race itself, the Abarth 124 rally has already turned in impressive performances on the trickiest terrains, such as at the Rallye de Montecarlo with Italians Andrea Nucita and Marco Vozzo, who recorded the 4th best time overall on the toughest timed stage with an alternation of icy, snow-covered and dry surfaces.

Tincescu (ROM) comes fresh from a fantastic 4th place overall in the Transilvania Rally is optimistic ahead of the first dirt road event in the hard-fought Romanian championship: "Our tests with the new dirt road setup were highly satisfactory," the driver declares. "The Abarth 124 rally is very well balanced and the suspensions absorb bumps very well, guaranteeing excellent road-holding on even the most uneven ground."

The Rally Aradului consists of two stages: the first starts from Arad at 4 pm on Friday 25 May and ends at 9.50 pm, and the second takes place on Saturday 26, starting at 8.30 am and ending at 5.25 pm. There are nine special test stages, with a total of 132 km of time trials out of a total course of 498 km.

In Italy, young Tuscan driver Cristopher Lucchesi (ITA), with navigator Marco Pollicino (ITA), is in search of his fourth success of the season in the R-GT category of the Italian Championship in the Rallye Elba, after his wins in the "Ciocco", the "Sanremo" and the Targa Florio. His main rival is Andrea Modanesi (ITA), from Brescia, paired with Roberto Mometti (ITA) and also driving a Bernini Rally team Abarth 124 rally.

The Rallye Elba has one of the longest traditions amongst events of its kind: it was first held in 1968, and Abarth cars have been victorious on numerous occasions: in 1974 with the Fiat Abarth 124 Rally, and in 1976, 1978, 1980 and 1981 with the Fiat 131 Abarth Rally. Striking scenery is the payback for a particularly tough course. The event is held over two days: it starts from Portoferraio at 4.15 pm on Friday 25 May, with the finish scheduled for 5.25 pm on Saturday 26, and there are ten special test stages, all on tarmac, giving a total of 151.48 km of time trials out of a course of 399 km.
